Environment Shapes the Brain
We don't experience spaces objectively. We experience them through prediction, memory, and emotion.
What inspired this?
That perspective became clearer while listening to the Huberman Lab episode How Your Brain Works & Changes and Anil Seth’s TED Talk Your Brain Hallucinates Your Conscious Reality.
Both offered a different lens on perception: rather than simply receiving the world around us, the brain is constantly interpreting sensory information through memory, expectation, emotion, and past experience.
For me, that immediately opened a new way of thinking about architecture and interior design. If our experience of space is shaped not only by what surrounds us, but by how the brain interprets it, then design becomes much more than a visual exercise, it becomes part of shaping human experience.
What stayed with me
01. The brain is constantly predicting. One of the biggest shifts in my thinking came from understanding that the brain doesn’t simply receive information; it constantly predicts and interprets the world using memory, experience, emotion, and sensory input. Every environment is experienced through that internal lens.
02. Perception is something we construct. The idea that perception is a “controlled hallucination” challenged the way I had always thought about space. Two people can walk into the same room and experience it differently because their brains are processing it through different expectations, emotions, and experiences.
If perception is shaped by sensory input, memory, emotion, and expectation, then the environments around us inevitably become part of that experience. Light, sound, materiality, spatial layout, texture, and proportion all contribute to what we perceive, suggesting that design is never simply aesthetic; it is part of how an environment is experienced.
Why this matters to me
This was when I began to see neuroscience not as a separate field, but as another lens through which to think about design. I’ve always believed that certain spaces simply feel different. Understanding how the brain perceives and responds to its surroundings offered a deeper explanation of why. It encouraged me to think beyond how a space looks and become increasingly interested in how it supports focus, well-being, emotion, creativity, and everyday life.
For me, this changes the role of the designer. Instead of asking only, “How should this space look?” I’m increasingly interested in asking, “How should this space help someone feel?”
- Could it encourage calm?
- Support focus?
- Reduce stress?
- Create moments of connection?
If perception is shaped by the brain, then design has the opportunity, and perhaps the responsibility, to shape experience with greater intention.
